Covid-19 Inquiry – Matt Hancock ‘profoundly sorry’ – @ 3:06:56
Hancock: I am profoundly sorry for each death that has occurred and I also understand why for some it will be hard to take that apology from me. Hancock told the inquiry he was “assured” the UK was “best prepared in the world to fight a pandemic,” but “that turned out to be wrong.”
First up today is Matt Hancock, the former Health Minister. He is being questioned about decisions taken leading up to the pandemic period.
Matt Hancock is the first politician during pandemic questioned now by the Inquiry.
It’s reported a widow who lost her husband to COVID cried when Hancock arrived.
She called on Mr Hancock to “tell the truth” to the inquiry, adding: “The bereaved families deserve that much.”
Questions asked about his department and the country’s preparedness for the pandemic. About massive shortages of personal protective equipment (PPE) for frontline health workers. Also controversy over the awarding of lucrative government contracts.
