Rishi Sunak: stop the boats plan is working – numbers have fallen
Rishi Sunak was in Dover where he provided an “update” on the government’s plans to stop migrants arriving on small boats.
The PM outlined that the government’s plan was starting to work. Sunak said “crossings are down 20%. First time numbers have fallen since the year before.”
He said: “I will not rest until all boats are stopped.”
The next challenge is accommodation for asylum seekers – costing the taxpayer £7m a day.
Two additional barges, announced today, and the conversion of two former military sites will help, but probably only scratch the surface
This as the flagship Illegal Migration Bill returns to parliament following recess.
No.10 confirmed that an “update” means no new policy announced.
The trip attempted to stress the government’s commitment to reducing the numbers arriving on our shores.
