First self-driving car on the road – watch the drive at 70mph

Ford’s Mustang Mach-E does all the steering but the driver must always be ready to take back the reins.

Transport Correspondent for the Times, Ben Clatworthy tries it out and is travelling no hands at 70mph on the motorway near Leamington.

It was with much trepidation he says, to get in, but the car could motor on its own with no hands on the wheel. Ben reports that once inside the sense he should sit back and relax and let it do the work.

There was genuine amazement when he released his grip and watched the wheel jiggle as the BlueCruise system took over and began to turn, following the bend in the road.
