Home Secretary: illegal arrivals swiftly removed – criminals break into Britain daily on ‘waves’ of channel boats
The government unveil sits plans to tackle small boats crossing the Channel. Illegal entrants will be swiftly removed.
Home Secretary Suella Braverman announced new legislation in Parliament to try to stop people crossing the Channel on small boats.
The new bill would ban people entering the UK illegally from claiming asylum or re-entering in the future. It will allow the government to stop the boats.
It would also place a duty on the home secretary to deport them “as soon as reasonably practicable”.
PM Rishi Sunak says the new law will take “back control of UK borders once and for all”, while Braverman says it will “push the boundaries of international law”.
But Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has raised doubts about its legality, describing it as “unworkable”.
