UK fighter jets would shoot down spy balloons

The government will do “whatever it takes” to keep the UK safe from spy balloons, Rishi Sunak has said.

The RAF is on standby to take down Chinese spy balloons over British airspace.  Such devices confronted by a Typhoon fighter jet.

Defence Secretary Ben Wallace is conducting a security review after the US military shot down a series of objects in Western airspace.

Risks would be assessed based on the available evidence.  If necessary Typhoon jets would be scrambled from RAF Lossiemouth in Moray or RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire, depending on where the threat is coming from.

On 4 February, the US military shot down a Chinese spy balloon after it travelled over sensitive military sites across North America. China claimed the object was a weather balloon gone astray.
