Rishi Sunak next PM – humbled and honoured – watch his first address to nation
The new Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said he was humbled to be the new leader of the party and the nation and the greatest privilege of my life.
In a brief statement, he paid tribute to his predecessor Liz Truss, and said the country faced a “profound economic challenge”.
Sunak is the UK’s first British Asian PM and at 42, the youngest leader in more than two centuries.
Immediately after selected by Tory MPs he ruled out an early general election and warned the party they had to “unite or die”.
