Kate in Belfast heckled: Ireland belongs to the Irish
The Princess of Wales was heckled during an impromptu walkabout in Belfast on Thursday, when she was told: “Ireland belongs to the Irish.”
The unidentified woman was in the crowd on Antrim Road in north Belfast, where the Princess and Prince William had been visiting a suicide prevention charity.
While shaking hands with the princess, the woman said: “Nice to meet you but it would be better if it was when you were in your own country.”
The Princess smiled politely before moving on to another well wisher.
The encounter took place in what is a predominantly nationalist area of Belfast.
The Wales’s received an otherwise warm reception as they were greeted outside the Public Initiative for Prevention of Suicide and Self Harm (PIPS) charity.
It was the couple’s first of three engagements on an unannounced visit to Northern Ireland.
