Will Smith hits Chris Rock at Oscars – took offence at a joke by the presenter

warning: expletives in video

Latest: Will Smith is banned from the Oscars for 10 years for slapping Chris Rock.  But he will be allowed to keep his award for Best Actor.  Star said he ‘accepts and respects’ the decision.

Earlier:

US actor Will Smith has resigned from the Oscars Academy.  In a statement he said his actions at the 94th Academy Awards presentation were shocking, painful and inexcusable.

The Academy accepted the resignation and would continue to move forward with disciplinary proceedings.

Will Smith slapped Chris Rock in the face on stage at the Oscars after the comic made a joke about the actor’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith.

“Jada, can’t wait for GI Jane 2,” he said, in an apparent reference to her shaved hairdo – which is a result of the hair loss condition alopecia.

Smith walked on stage and struck Rock before returning to his seat and shouting: “Keep my wife’s name out of your [expletive] mouth.”

He later apologised on stage.
