Competition launched to host HQ of Great British Railways

Grant Shapps and Michael Portillo host the video promotion for the contest.

Towns and cities at the heart of Britain’s industrial revolution nearly 200 years ago compete to become new home of Great British Railways.

York, Doncaster and Darlington are among the bidders.

Ministers announced a public vote on where Great British Railways will be headquartered.   The winning bid in line to generate hundreds of new jobs for the local area.

The public body is the centrepiece of the biggest shake-up of the industry in more than a quarter of a century.

Grant Shapps, the Transport Secretary, announced the reforms last May.  This in a bid to address years of bad service on the railways.
