Afghanistan: Raab did not consider resigning – watch replay

Dominic Raab faced a grilling from MPs of the parliamentary foreign affairs committee this afternoon.   They wanted to understand “what he’s done in the last four months” to help Afghanistan.

Conservative MP Tom Tugendhat is chair of the committee.  In his closing remarks he said the Government’s handling of the Taliban takeover was the worst since the Suez Canal.

Despite questions about his holiday, Dominic Raab refused to give an answer on the dates he was away.

Main question: What went so horribly wrong?  Raab: keen to have a reality check and said there was an ‘optimism bias’ that the Americans would change their mind.

Raab initially said intelligence suggested Kabul ‘would not fall this year’.

He told the MPs he did not consider resigning over the issue of the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan.
