Govt pledges to stop English clubs joining ESL – House of commons

Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden said: “Football is in our national DNA…I was appalled by the announcement made last night. It’s a tone-deaf proposal that goes against the spirit of the game. We will not stand by and let this happen.’

A small handful of owners want to create a closed shop. I believe passionately in our national institutions. They form solidarity across the generations.

Now we will not hesitate to protect one of those national institutions, football. This will fall to the football authorities first, but if they can’t, we will. We will put everything on the table. They have put money before fans.”

The move is condemned across the House.  Mr Dowden due to speak at 4.30pm.

The teams planning to join the European Super League: Liverpool FC, Manchester United.  Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham.

This means the new league would rival the current Champions League competition, one of the biggest club tournaments in football.

The clubs want a new midweek competition and to continue competing in national leagues.  The ESL would have 20 teams. Of these, the 12 founding members – plus three yet to join – would be permanent and never face relegation.

Many supporters disapprove along with politicians, senior figures in the game and football fans.

What are your thoughts on this plan?  Should they break away?  Is it time to introduce a new style of football leagues?  Should the government stop this?
