Boris Johnson update on anniversary of lockdown – 17:00

The Prime Minister joined by Sir Patrick Vallance and Chris Whitty.

Boris: In retrospect there are probably many things we wish had known and done differently.  The country is cautiously on path to freedom.

Boris: It has been an extraordinary moment in our history, a deeply difficult and distressing period.  Country fighting against a callous and invisible enemy – the pandemic is not over yet. We mourn every life lost in this country.

The Prime Minister also said he had thought it was impossible to develop a vaccine and immunise half of the adult population within 12 months.  But the vaccination programme is going full speed ahead.

PM said a fitting and permanent memorial to the loved ones lost will be built when the right moment comes.

Chris Whitty warned there were bumps and twists on the road.  For example, vaccine shortages and new varients.
