Parliament: Sarah Everard added to list of women killed – General Debate: International Women’s Day

30 September 2021:  A Met Police officer who murdered Sarah Everard after kidnapping her under the guise of an arrest has been sentenced to a whole-life prison sentence.

Wayne Couzens abducted the 33-year-old as she walked home from a friend’s house in Clapham, south London, on 3 March.

Ahead of sentencing Couzens, the judge said the circumstances of the case were “devastating, tragic and wholly brutal”.

Labour MP Jess Phillips stood up in Parliament to read out the names of all the women killed by men in the last year.  At the end she said: We have all prayed that the name of Sarah Everard  would never be on any list .  But let’s pray every day that nobody’s name ends up on the list again.

It is understood that 118 women killed – one every three days during the past 12 months.
