Covid – tighter rules for Christmas and tier 4

Boris Johnson holds a press conference from Downing Street as concerns grow about the spread of a new Covid variant in south-east England.  It’s reported that the new virus is spreading at an alarming rate in London and South East.  PM to announce tier 4 level.  Non essential retail expected to be shut down.

PM: Cannot continue with Christmas as planned.  Areas in tiers 1,2 and 3 will be able to mix households on Christmas day only.

Earlier the prime minister hosted a cabinet meeting to discuss what action to take.

Chief medical officer Prof Chris Whitty said government advisers “consider the new strain can spread more quickly”.  There is now significant concern and extra restrictions may be necessary.
