PM declares England on lockdown . It would be for four weeks
PM declares England on lockdown. Restrictions start 5 November through to 2 December and furlough will be extended
Latest: A further 21,915 cases in latest 24 hour period, and 326 Covid-related deaths announced in the UK.
Scientists warned that the number of cases in England were rising too fast. The scientists said a lockdown is essential to control the increase.
The PM joined by England’s chief medical officer Chris Whitty and the government’s chief scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance.
PM announced a new “stay at home” order, with schools, colleges and universities exempt.
The hope is that the action will slow the spread of the disease and allow ministers to ease restrictions into Christmas.
So far the government has concentrated on regional restrictions but that is about to change.
Way ahead: optimistic it will be better by spring. Better turn around tests. Massive expansion of testing.
