SOFIA discovers Water on the Moon – on a Sunlit Surface

SOFIA discovers Water on the Moon

Scientists used a NASA telescope on an airplane when they discovered water on a sunlit surface of the Moon.  It is for the first time.  The aircraft is  the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy, known as SOFIA.

SOFIA is a modified Boeing 747SP aircraft. It allows astronomers to study the solar system and beyond.  It is done in ways not possible with ground-based telescopes.  Molecular water, H2O, found in the Clavius Crater one of the largest craters visible from Earth in the Moon’s southern hemisphere.

The discovery indicates water distributed across the lunar surface, and not limited to cold, shadowed places.
