MPs appear on Russian Television – despite channel found to misinform

Sir Keir Starmer, the Labour leader, called for the state-controlled channel, RT, to be stripped of its licence to broadcast in Britain.  This after its role in spreading Kremlin misinformation was revealed in the Intelligence and Security Committee’s Russia report.

At least one Conservative backbencher and a string of SNP MPs have appeared on Russia Today in recent months.  Despite the television station  found to have breached impartiality rules.

RT, as Russia Today is now known, was fined £200,000 by Ofcom last July for seven violations of the broadcasting code. It was in relation to its coverage of the Salisbury novichok poisonings. Two of the shows found to have broken impartiality rules were presented by George Galloway, the former Labour and Respect MP.

RT claimed the ruling violated the channels freedom of expression but the penalty upheld by the High Court in May.
