Govt Covid-19 news update 22 May – Live from Downing Street. All arrivals into the country will need to go into quarantine from June 8

Latest: 351 Covid-19 related deaths across all settings in the UK making total = 36,393

Home Secretary Priti Patel hosts today’s Downing Street briefing where she is expected to confirm that international travellers, including returning UK citizens, could face spot checks and £1,000 fines if they fail to self-isolate for 14 days after arriving in the country.

The latest information on deaths and hospital admissions given.

Priti Patel: All people arriving in the UK will have to self-quarantine for 14 days from 8 June. Penalties if measures are broken. There will be spot checks by the authorities. Enforcement as a last resort.Those who break self-isolation rules face a fine of £1,000

Summer holidays? Advice is not to travel.  Don’t book holiday don’t want a second wind of the virus.

With her:

Paul Lincoln Director General, Border Force:  30,000 illegal items stopped. At the border there will be spot checks, then passengers have to go to self-isolation areas.

Sir Patrick Vallance, UK’s chief scientific adviser: New infections about 1,000 people a week.  The numbers are shrinking.  Confirmed cases coming down day by day.  People in hospital with disease coming down. This all done by complying with social distancing.
