Govt Covid-19 news update 21 May – from Downing Street. Immunity certificates planned

Health Secretary, Matt Hancock leads the briefing.  It comes as Boris Johnson’s government launched a strand of the national track and trace trial today. The Prime Minister has pledged to get contract tracing in place by 1 June. There is also a deal agreed for an antibody virus tests on NHS.

New: PM has asked Home Office and Department of Health to remove NHS & Care workers from the NHS surcharge as soon as possible.

Matt Hancock: Completed over 3 million tests in UK. 36,042 have died. Test: A swab test – if you have virus. Innovative  early test being trialed from today get result on the spot within or around 20 minutes. Anti Body tests: agreed a supply of antibody tests with Health and Care workers first in line to receive them. Three further tests announced.

Covid Alert Levels. There are 5 and we’re at level 4. Now in position to move to level 3.

Professor Chris Whitty – Chief Medical Officer: People who had Covid-19 137,00 4 May to 17 May 2020. Expect numbers to go down. Some increase in people driving. Admissons overall daily admissions peaked early April but have been falling. Trend is down. Deaths steadily decreasing.
