The government delivers its daily coronavirus update with Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden joined by Steve Powis. It comes after Prime Minister Boris Johnson was grilled by MPs in the House of Commons over the UK’s efforts on track & testing and care homes.

Oliver Dowden, Culture Secretary: £70m contributed by Comic Relief. Smaller charities can apply for funds. £150m for people who are socially vulnerable. When can nurses working on the frontline return to their normal jobs? Once peak falls further can return to more normal working patterns. Don’t be afraid to use the NHS for any other serious illnesses.

Ambitious plans to get tourism up and running by end of July. Keen to get Premier League back behind closed doors.

Professor Stephen Powis, National Medical Officer for NHS England: Social distancing a slow increase in vehicle movements but public transport very low. Public complied with instructions. Increase because of capacity of testing. Overall stable and even falling. Hospital admissions: 637 on a decline. Mechanical ventilator beds – falling. Number of people in hospital less than 10,000. Deaths on a downward trend but must not get complacent need to stay vigilant, stay alert. Track and trace strategy is very important for keeping virus under control  but it is not the only thing.
