Govt Coronavirus news update 16 May

Department of Health 468 new Covid-19 deaths in all settings making the total 34,466

Briefing

This comes from Downing Street where they deliver the latest information on deaths, hospital admissions and care homes. The government official leading the briefing is Gavin Williamson, Education Secretary.  Will he tell us more about schools opening in June?

Many parents and teachers unhappy. They suggest the schools are not ready to take pupils.

Gavin Williamson, Education Secretary: It is almost 8 weeks since we’re asked schools and colleges to close. We want to see children in school. We can now start the plan for a limited return to school potentially as early as next month. As part of our plan years 1 and year 6 back to school in small class sizes.  Also years 10 and 12.

There are some for delaying opening of schools. We’re asking some children to come back to school 1st June. Asking school to offer a protective bubble around them. Govt wants to see children back in school as children grow and benefit from school. We’ll be carefully monitoring the impact of this first phase.  We know lots of you worried about sending kids back to school.  I want to reassure this approach based on best scientific advise. We don’t want them to miss out to be at school and with their friends.

Education is the Greatest Leveller

Dr Jenny Harries, Deputy Chief Medical Officer: admissions down 20%. Hospital admissions down London looking good. Across every region movement in the right direction. Daily death rate varies slightly but continuing to fall down.  Communities may have lower R rate than the national picture.

There are 240,161 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in UK.

This is followed by questions from the public and media.
