Grant Shapps, Secretary of State for Transport: Preparing transport strategy. Launching £2bn package to encourage people to cycle and walkd to work. Public transport needs public to think about how they travel. Increased popularity is cycling. In new world pedestrians need more space. In early June publication of increased walking space by 2025. Wider pavements, cycle only streets. Employers can offer bike schemes backed by government. Wants to preserve this cleaner air. Stagger journeys and lift burden on public transport. £10m will be provided for car charging points for electric cars. Test app going down well in Isle of Wight and people are enthusiastically downloading it.
Prof Jonathan Van-Tam, Deputy Chief Medical Officer: Motor vehicle trend is up. Tube and National remained at 5%. Daily tests in the last 24 hours 96,878. New cases 3,896 but difficult and need to care with numbers. People in hospital with Covid-19 a decrease of 17%. Critical care beds continues to decline. Recorded deaths steady fall in total numbers. We will have to be very cautious, careful and measured about what happens next. I’m confident that our “R”rate is less than 1 overall.
