Govt Covid-19 update 7 May – further 539 takes number up to 30,615 UK Covid-19 deaths

Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab hosts today’s Covid-19 briefing as the coronavirus lockdown is expected to be formally extended. Today is the deadline by which ministers must legally review the lockdown, which comes around every three weeks. Downing Street has already said no changes will be made today.

Summary

Downing Street says any easing of lockdown guidelines next week will be very limited and the government has adopted a four nation approach where the nations should exit the lockdown at the same time.

Dominic Raab: R rating at between 0.5 and 0.9.  Virus not beaten yet remains deadly and infectious. We can start to think about the next stage. The PM on Sunday will set out next steps based on scientific guidance.  We want to bounce back with vigour and energy.  Any changes we make will be monitored. There is no change to the rules today. Looking at ramping up issues with care homes have control across the country but need it across all sectors. Got rate of infection down.

Professor Sir Ian Diamond Chief Statistician ONS. All the data shows the success of social distancing should be maintained.

Dr Jenny Harries OBE, Deputy Chief Medical Officer for England: rates of new cases hope to come down. Just about all regions have come right down a deacreas of 16 % over last week. Critical care beds with patients have been decreasing over the past 2 weeks. There’s a gradual decline but need to maintain distancing. We don’t want a second peak and we don’t want in the winter.  Get your flu jabs this year.  Home environment is where find linked case

On Sunday the Prime Minister speaks to the nation on television about the next stage surrounding the lockdown.  It will be at 7pm.

Ministers are finalising plans for an easing of a small number of measures next week.
