UK Government holds daily coronavirus update in Downing Street amid PPE controversy. A Turkish shipment of PPE arrived this morning three days late. The plane is thought to have picked up less than half the items ordered – which is thought will only last for an extra day or two on the current “burn rate”.
There have been 18,100 deaths from coronavirus in hospital, and a daily death toll of 759, according to figures from the Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC).
Dominic Raab, Foreign Secretary is chairing the meeting. He is currently standing in for the PM. We are not out of the woods yet. There is a ‘glimmer of light’ at the end of the tunnel but ‘we are not there yet’.
General Sir Nick Carter, Head of Armed Forces: Our experts in coordination and distribution. Pop-up and mobiles libraries could be in place soon for testing.
Professor Chris Whitty, chief medical officer: people in hospital situation improving and broadly flat. Deaths upward climb has flattened off over last weekend and a half. Unlikely the UK will see a sudden drop in Covid-19 cases as it passes the peak. Likely socially disruptive measures will last to end of year
And media will follow-up virtually with questions.
