House of Commons Coronavirus Bill –  fast track parliament process

The Coronavirus Bill: all stages. Fast moving legislation. The government is hoping to pass all stages of their 329-page emergency bill through the House of Commons on Monday.

With cross-party support for the urgency and general principles of the new laws, progress of the Coronavirus Bill is not under threat. But there will still be disagreements and pressure on ministers.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock has stressed that the powers in the bill would only be used “when strictly necessary” and would remain in force only for as long as required to respond to the crisis.

The bill also sets out how people can become emergency volunteers. It will allow employees to take unpaid leave and creates a fund to compensate them for loss of earnings.

Matt Hancock: Will introduce a hotline for NHS staff who need personal protection equipment.  Also takes into account faith burials.

Shadow Health Secretary:  Everyone who can be at home should be at home and everyone who can work from home should do so.

Will people listen?  Look at what happened at the weekend especially Sunday. Everyone went out, mixed and did very little distancing. How can they be convinced? Does it need penalties?  Should it involve the police?  Don’t they have enough to do?  Staying at home does save lives.  A good message so why aren’t people listening to it?  Will the new bill work?
