Budget day: Rishi Sunak – Chancellor

The new finance minister Rishi Sunak announcing the UK’s budget.  It is the first after Brexit and in the midst of the Covid-19 outbreak across the world.  It comes amid continued pressure from the coronavirus outbreak.

Some elements already revealed.  They included more than £600bn for infrastructure projects over five years and extra money for potholes.

Statutory sick pay will be made available to all advised to self-isolate. It will be made quicker and easier to get benefits for self-employed.

A £500m Hardship Fund being created to support vulnerable people.  Govt to refund cost of providing statutory Sick Pay for up to 14 days.

Flood Defences will receive £120m fund to repair damaged flood defences, and £5.2bn to be invested i flood defences over next six years.

Some other issues:

30,000 hectares of trees to be planted by 2025,  22,000 civil servants to move outside central London. £2.5bn pothole fund and £27bn for strategic roads and motorways.  From December 1 VAT on books newspapers and magazines abolished.

Up to £8m for Football Foundation’s scheme for new football pitches.  There will be £12bn multi-year settlement for affordable housing. Immigration Health Surcharge raised to £624. And Corporation Tax rate cut cancelled, this was a promised in manifesto

As part of his budget plans the Chancellor has abolished tax on tampons and it will begin from January 2021.
