Volunteers Take Action To Save Music Libraries

Volunteers have stepped in to help save music libraries as councils threaten to close or move the service because of economic cuts.

Surrey Performing Arts Library (SPAL) is one of them.  The collection was moved from Dorking and left at Surrey Council’s Bourne Hall library in Ewell.

But an independent charity stepped in to rescue the library and is in the process of cataloguing and safeguarding the assets.

Known as the New Surrey Performing Arts Library (NewSPAL), it has raised funds and found a new location with the Woking Borough Council.  Backing NewSPAL is Making Music, the UK’s top organisation for leisure-time music.
