Government: Security in Middle East. MPs updated on the Iran crisis

Defence Secretary Ben Wallace told parliament that helicopters and ships ‘on standby to assist if needed’.

Mr Wallace went on to say that the Foreign Office had “strengthened” its travel advice to both Iran and Iraq.

He urged those intending to travel to the region to check for regular updates.  Currently, for British-Iranian dual nationals, the FCO advised against all travel to Iran.  Only very limited travel for those in other circumstances.

The minister also told MPs:  defence changing the readiness of our forces in the region.  Including helicopters and ships on standby to assist if the need arose.

Ben Wallace: “non-essential personnel” will be relocated from Baghdad. Coalition forces including British forces have suspended all training activities.

Jeremy Corbyn was concerned the Prime Minister was not in attendance.  He asked was the PM really doing other things that were more important than addressing parliament.

Earlier, Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab says a war between the US and Iran would “only benefit terrorist groups”. The UK government is determined to find a “diplomatic route” through the situation.

What are your thoughts on the statement?  Enough action being taken by the UK?  Should there be more action?  Is the diplomatic route the right way to go?  Do you fear there could be war? Remember the Iraq war?
