Tory Leadership Candidates In TV Debates. Final candidates to appear in front of cameras for viewers across the country.

Invitations have been extended by:  BBC, SKY NEWS, CHANNEL 4 NEWS, ITV NEWS.  So far, those with eight backers have agreed to take part.

Debates

BBC ONE and BBC News Channel– Andrew Neil interviews Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt 7pm – getting close to end of leadership race.

The Sun and TalkRADIO hosted an exclusive debate between the two Conservative contenders 15 July. It will be the final showdown!

ITV – a debate scheduled for 9 July 8pm hosted by Julie Etchingham.

BBC One planning leadership debate on Question Time with Fiona Bruce.  Date to be advised.

SKY NEWS – Kay Burley will host a leadership debate between the two final contenders – date and time yet to be decided.  Boris Johnson turned down the offer and it did not happen.  There are reports of a live debate Monday July 1.  But it is understood that Boris won’t do Sky because he is committed to doing ITV first.

Past debates

BBC One held a debate Tuesday 18 June at 20:00 hosted by Emily Maitlis.  Boris Johnson, Jeremy Hunt, Michael Gove, Sajid Javid and Rory Stewart participated.  They answered questions from the public.

Channel 4 hosted the first debate Sunday 16 June, 18:30.  Presenter Krishnan Guru-Murthy.  Boris Johnson did not participate.

Theresa May officially stepped down as the leader of the Conservative Party 7 June 2019.  But Mrs May remains  prime minister until her successor is chosen.

The deadline for nominations was Monday, 10 June. But as well as committing to standing, candidates had to get enough backers to even take part.

CANDIDATES:

Michael Gove, Matt Hancock, Mark Harper, Jeremy Hunt, Sajid Javid.  Boris Johnson, Andrea Leadsom, Esther McVery, Dominic Raab, Rory Stewart.

Eventually the ten will be whittled down to two and finally one.  The new leader announced weed of July 22.
