Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris Engulfed in Flames. A major fire spread through one of France’s most famous landmarks.  French President Emmanuel Macron has vowed to rebuild the medieval cathedral.

The Gothic Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris caught fire on Monday 15 April 2019. Firefighters battled the blaze that ripped through the historical cathedral however they managed to save the main stone structure.

Main loss is the spire that stood out across the french capital and the roof. It was made of wood.  Officials told AFP that the fire could be linked to planned maintenance and restoration of the building.

A Paris fire official said the main structure now saved and preserved. The Paris prosecutor’s office said it opened an inquiry into the accidental destruction by fire.

Large crowd gathered to watch as the disaster unfolded.  Many on their knees praying.

French President

French President Emmanuel Macron arrived at the scene and said his thoughts were with all Catholics and all French people.

“Like all of my countrymen, I am sad tonight to see this part of us burn.”

President Macron said Notre-Dame Cathedral will rise again. Many valuable artefacts saved by firefighters.

It is expected to take several days before the fire is put out completely.  Restoration could take years but it will be done says Macron.
