Home Secretary Responds to report on Wayne Couzens

James Cleverly responded to part one of the Angiolini Inquiry.  He said it made “huge strides” in “rooting out officers not fit to wear the badge”.

Inquiry chair Lady Elish Angiolini said “without a significant overhaul, there is nothing to stop another Couzens operating in plain sight”.

Home secretary said more changes to the police disciplinary system were being set out.

The Home Office added the government bringing forward legislation to make it easier to sack officers.  Especially those who fail to hold basic vetting when re-checked, as well as anyone found guilty of gross misconduct.

shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper – agrees with most of what Cleverly said.  But considers his response to the Angiolini report “too weak, it is too little and it is too late, and the lack of urgency is unfathomable to me”.
