BepiColombo Launch LIVE – WATCH AGAIN.  Successful blast-off.  All looked good.  Weather clear. Mission control overjoyed with this first mission.  COUNTDOWN IS @ 37:27

Watch again the ESA-JAXA BepiColombo mission to Mercury launched on an Ariane 5 from Europe’s Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. The journey is 5 billion miles to the planet closest to the sun.  It will take seven years to get there.

BepiColombo is the first European mission to Mercury, the smallest and least explored planet in the inner Solar System. It is the first Mercury mission to send two science orbiters to make complementary measurements of the planet’s dynamic environment at the same time.

The Mercury Planetary Orbiter and Mio are the two taking heading for the Mercury Planet.  A journey that will provide vital data for planet earth.  It will take seven years to reach its destination.  Once there it will deploy two orbiters, one European and the other Japanese, to circle the planet for up to two years.

A third module will transport the orbiters on the seven-year cruise to Mercury, using a combination of solar electric propulsion and nine gravity assist flybys at Earth, Venus and Mercury.

The mission is an exciting one. It is considered an expensive mission but scientists say it is a vital mission.  It has British scientific involvement in the making of BepiColombo.
