Pope Francis in Ireland – we join the visit LIVE from 10am BST Saturday August 25. He arrives for the World Meeting of Families
The Pope arrives at Dublin airport 10.30am where he will be met by officials. He then heads for Aras an Uachtarain and Dublin Castle.
Ireland once a deeply Catholic and religious country. But has undergone a social revolution in the four decades since the last papal visit.
Pope John Paul II landed in Ireland in 1979. He drew crowds of over 2.5m – more than half the state’s population. His first words were: I Love You
Crowds are expected to be big but not as large as the last Papal visit. A lot has happened, in particular, child abuse scandals, new laws on abortion and gay marriage. Irish public want to hear that Pope Francis is going to take action of the child abuse issues.
President of Ireland one of first people to welcome Pope Francis followed by meeting with politicians, civil society leaders and diplomats. He will give a short speech afterwards.
There’s not likely to be a genuflect to kiss the ground on his arrival at Dublin. Pope Francis has one lung and weakness in his knees. We understand and want him to enjoy his time in Ireland
