The Brixton Pound is breaking records.  The shop that sells the currency has announced it has opened a cash machine for the community who need cash in a hurry.

The world’s first local currency cash machine has been installed in the heart of one of London’s biggest boroughs. Just south west of the Bank of England, Brixton now has an ATM machine that dispenses its own special currency. The Brixton Pound (B£) is strictly for the locals and can only be spent in the area.

The banknotes are impressive featuring local celebrities like David Bowie and Luol Deng as well as artwork from those in the borough.  The especially designed cashpoint has financial support from the Lord Mayor’s High Street Fund.

Brixton began using its own currency in 2009 with the backing for the Lambeth Council.
