The Football Club: Artist in Residence

The Football Club: Artist in Residence.  This is a film that features in a new Channel 4 Arts strand. Artists are placed in unlikely settings to create work in response to what they find.  Don’t miss it Sunday 29 July 10.05pm on Channel 4

In this show, portrait artist Tai Shan Schierenberg finds himself on a football pitch. It is with West Bromwich Albion Football Club.  He has painted well-known people like Stephen Hawking, Seamus Heaney and the Queen.  His mission should be a doddle if not a lot of fun.  But it is not quite like that.

The film sees Tai spend a season as artist in residence during one of Albion’s most turbulent seasons in living memory. What starts as a behind-the-scenes look at the beautiful game becomes an emotional fight by the club to stave off relegation. The show features unusually frank interviews with players, management and fans.

It is fascinating viewing.  There’s fun, love and anger.  The mix is emotional.

Production

The programme culminates in Tai unveiling a series of stunning portraits of West Brom players, ex-manager Tony Pulis and life-long fans.

Tai Shan Schierenberg’s film is produced by Storyvault Films.  Exec producer is Danielle Graham

The Artist in Residence show reflects Head of Specialist Factual John Hay’s push to expand the channel’s distinctive ‘artist-authored documentary’ approach to arts programming.  It is an excellent idea. Closes gap between public and artists. What better way to do it than to expose dramas of football

GOES OUT ON CHANNEL 4 SUNDAY JULY 29 @ 10.05PM
