Commonwealth Games: Wilson Wins Gold. It was a superb performance that stunned the crowd
Gymnasts Nile Wilson and James Hall gave England a one-two in the men’s all-around final, at the Commonwealth Games.
Wilson, nursing a wrist injury, went into the final rotation in joint first place. Marios Georgiou of Cyprus, just 0.025 points ahead of Hall. He posted 15.100 on the horizontal bar to win by 0.975 points.
In a scintillating competition on the Gold Coast, Leeds-born Wilson began as favourite. This in the absence of reigning all-around Commonwealth champion Max Whitlock.
England’s Max Whitlock chose to sit out the event to focus on the individual floor and the pommel titles. He watched from the stands as his England team-mate took his title.
Wilson made slow and steady progress up the leaderboard after modest performances on the floor and the pommel. A routine that had to be adapted to accommodate his injury.
What a performance. Wilson was crazy with joy. His family was ecstatic.
Did you see the performance? Was it on television you saw it or at the Gold Coast stadium? We want your reaction. England is doing so well at the Commonwealth Games. The team is second on the medal table. Australia at the top. Can England knock them off the lead?
