Zoo Fire Kills Aardvark and Meerkats – Fire services arrived within minutes of receiving the call.

Staff injured and an aardvark and about four meerkats killed when fire broke out at London Zoo.

Up to 70 firefighters tackled the blaze at its height in the Animal Adventure section. The fire on the move and spread to a shop.

One person taken to hospital. Eight treated at the scene.

The zoo confirmed an aardvark called Misha died in the fire.  Four meerkats still unaccounted for, presumed dead. The zoo was shut on Saturday but would reopen on Sunday.

The cause of the fire is not yet known. Witnesses described the blaze as massive and moving fast.

Ten fire engines went to the zoo shortly after 06:00 GMT. Zoo sits in the capital’s Regent’s Park.  The fire brought under control about three hours later.

Six people given help at the scene for the effects of smoke inhalation. Two for minor injuries, London Ambulance Service said.

In a statement the zoo said it was devastated about what had happened.  The animals are popular with visitors.  Usually first stop when arriving at Zoo.
