Ashes: Nightmare Start For England as Starc claims Cook’s scalp. England Captain falls victim to Cummins ball

England number five Dawid Malan survives off the last ball of the first day of the opening Ashes Test.  Mitchell Starc’s review is unsuccessful. The tourists close on 196-4, with James Vince (83) and Mark Stoneman (53) both to the fore.

England captain Joe Root departs late on day one. Pat Cummins bowled him out for lbw.

They are going down like flies

England endure a dreadful start at the Gabba as prized opener Alastair Cook is the first man to fall after scoring just two runs.

Perfect weather for the first day.  Sunshine everywhere.  Gabba packed with cricket supporters.

But it was not perfect day for England. Alastair Cook knocked out. He couldn’t believe it.  Nor could the fans.

People back home tearing their hair out as they saw Cook walk off the field.  Then Root was out for lbw.  Going from bad to worse.

First day of Ashes 22 November through to 27 November.  There is still time.  England can turn this round.  Crucial day is Sunday November 26.

The England team hope to break the 29 years of dominance by the Gabba.  Captain Joe Roots said ahead of the first day that England was ready to go!
