First Interstellar Asteroid Wows Scientists – can’t believe the discovery

Scientists surprised and delighted to detect –for the first time– an interstellar asteroid passing through the solar system.

Additional observations brought more surprises: the object is cigar-shaped with a somewhat reddish hue.

The asteroid, named Oumuamua, by its discoverers. It is up to one-quarter mile (400 meters) long and elongated. Up to 10 times as long as it is wide.

This unlike any asteroid or comet observed in the solar system to date. It could provide new clues into how other solar systems formed.

Discovered by NASA funded telescope in Hawaii on 19 October 2017
