Building of RRS Sir David Attenborough – construction continues.  Watch construction work so far.

Construction update on the RRS Sir David Attenborough – one of the most advanced polar research vessels in the world. This time-lapse video, shot by Cammell Laird, records progress over the first year of construction.

The ship will be completed by October 2018.

Investigation carried out into the aerodynamic performance of Britain’s new polar research vessel. A computer generated ‘virtual wind tunnel’ was used to ensure the vessel meets its operational requirements.  On the whole the design of the SDA performed well.

RRS Sir David Attenborough was commissioned by NERC and built by Cammell Laird. The new polar research ship is capable of circling the entire Antarctic continent twice. The ship will allow scientists of British Antarctic Survey greater opportunities for exploration and research with state-of-the-art facilities.

British Antarctic Survey operates the UK’s polar research infrastructure for its own scientists and for the British and international science community. It works regularly with national Antarctic operators from over thirty countries.  Also with nations who operate research facilities in Arctic.
