Elisa is a mute, isolated woman . Elisa works as a cleaning lady in a hidden, high-security government laboratory in 1962 Baltimore. Her life changes forever when she discovers the lab’s classified secret. A mysterious, scaled creature from South America lives in a water tank. Elisa develops a unique bond with her new friend. But soon learns that the creatures fate and survival lies in the hands of a hostile government agent and a marine biologist.

Guillermo del Toro first met Sally Hawkins at the 2014 Golden Globes, and pitched the film to her while being intoxicated; “I was drunk and it’s not a movie that makes you sound less drunk”.

Set during a real-life war and featuring magical elements. This was also the premise for Guillermo del Toro’s earlier film Pan’s Labyrinth (2006)
