LIVE Hurricane Irma Tracking Hits Florida September 10 – replay of the huge swirling scenes of the hurricane as it left destruction in its wake
Using NASA / NOAA satellite GOES 16 following Hurricane Irma as it builds in the Atlantic and now hitting Florida almost coast to coast.
Official Hurricane Centre had downgraded Irma to category 3 storm. It strengthened as it hit landfall to category 4. However Monday 11 September the storm had fallen to category 1. Despite this Irma had immense power and caused life-threatening damage.
It was a massive storm that covered almost the whole of Florida. In the State, 5.6 million people, or 25% of the US state’s population, were told to leave as the storm approached. There were some who did not want to move
Irma hit Florida Keys at about dawn local September 10. Florida Governor Rick Scott issued a stark warning to those in the threatened areas on the west coast. They must leave. Millions attempted to find safe places. It is reported there have been some fatalities due to the storm.
The National Guard was out searching for anyone stranded or needed help. Water was rising in most parts of Western Florida and winds destroyed trees and power lines.
People were told to move before it was too late. If not on road by 1600 local September 9 then residents must seek shelter. Shelter centres filled quickly.
There were power outages across the State.
