Oscars Mistake.  It was unbelievable.  Shockwaves were felt across the glitzy audience. Millions of TV viewers around the globe saw the whole shambles unfold in front of their eyes. There was confusion on stage. Was it over?  Was there a problem?  What was happening?  Full team of La La Land was on stage

Moonlight has won best picture at the Oscars – but only after Faye Dunaway initially said La La Land had won. There was applause. No-one knew it was an error.  She had read what she saw on the card.

Warren Beatty was handed the previous winner’s envelope, containing a card saying “Emma Stone, La La Land”, resulting in the error. He said he had read out the right thing.  Which was true but the envelope was the wrong one.

The team from La La Land was in the middle of its acceptance speeches when the mistake was discovered.  They began to realise something was up.  Then the truth became known.

Its musical producer Jordan Horowitz announced there had been a mistake.

He said: “This is not a joke. Moonlight is best picture,” and showed the camera the card that revealed the winner.  This was the one that should have been handed to Beatty and Dunaway.

Emma Stone said backstage afterwards: “Is that the craziest Oscar moment of all time? Cool! It’s going to be history.”

Oscar’s 89th presentation turned out to be a humiliation. There was total confusion and difficult to work out what had happened.

PriceWaterhouseCooper, the accountancy firm responsible for counting the ballots, said in a statement: “We sincerely apologise to Moonlight, La La Land, Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway, and Oscar viewers for the error that was made during the award announcement for best picture.”
