The new £1 coin will go into circulation from 28 March 2017. Government and Royal Mint launched a campaign to alert businesses to prepare for the coin.
Public now urged to use their £1 coins or bank them before they lose their legal tender status
The old 30-year-old coin will be taken out of circulation and replaced with a new 12-sided version. Deadline is midnight October 15.
This stylish new coin will be the most secure of its kind in the world. The aim is to help combat counterfeiters who have around 45 million counterfeit £1 coins currently in circulation.
New security features include a hologram-like image that changes from a ‘£’ symbol to the number ‘1’ when the coin is seen from different angles. Micro-letterings and milled edges carved onto the metal.
Businesses of all sizes are being encouraged to visit www.thenewpoundcoin.com where information can be found on how to get ready for the change. Bosses can also download helpful materials to help educate and train staff.
