Karen Darke In Shock With Gold Medal Win. The hand cyclist was in shock after her win in the H1-3 time trial where she beat USA’s Alicia Dana by 12.55 seconds

She said it was not a smooth ride.

Karen talked about how her bike chain came off and she had to stop and fix it!  But despite this she still was first past the finish line.

She said she couldn’t believe she was ahead of her competitors.  In fact, she admitted she was in shock when she learned she had won gold.

In the London 2012 games Karen hoped to win bronze when she past the finish line holding hands with a colleague.  But it wasn’t granted.

Four years on and the intrepid athlete, who is paralysed from the chest down, has been grabbing headlines once again.

“I got hit by a car in 2013 and so I had a year when I wasn’t sure whether I’d be able to cycle again, my right arm didn’t work for a while I lost sensation and movement in it, so 2013 I lost a season and that was a tough year.”

But all that is in the past.  She was a cracker in Rio and raced through to Gold in the H1-3 time trial.
