Mandela Royal Premiere – The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge did not know about Nelson Mandela’s death when they attended the World Premiere of the film ‘Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom’.  It was an engagement planned well ahead of the date.

The announcement was made as the movie about his life was being celebrated by a Royal World Premiere at the Odeon cinema in Leicester Square London.  The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were guests for the evening which was also in aid of The Cinema and Television Benevolent Fund.

Mandela Royal Premiere

Prince William and Kate learned of Mandela’s death after the film. Two of Mandela’s daughters Zenani and Zindzi Mandela were also attending the screening when they were told of their father’s death.  Daughter Zindzi insisted the showing of the movie should still go ahead

At the end of the screening Prince William with Kate alongside him paid tribute to the great leader and his extraordinary achievements, expressing his condolences to the Mandela family.

Others in the audience were not told until after the movie had ended when the film’s producer, Anant Singh, got up on stage and announced the ‘sad news’.  Tears were shed as they heard of Nelson Mandela’s death
