The government has raised the issue of forced marriage during school holidays and warn teachers, doctors and airport staff to be on alert.
Ministers warn there’s concern about teenagers going abroad thinking it was a holiday trip – instead being forced into marriage. Young people between the ages of 16 and 25 are most at risk of forced marriage in the UK – with children as young as two being targeted.
The Forced Marriage Unit, set up by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, said it helped 1,485 cases last year. Freedom Charity has launched a new smartphone app designed to provide information about forced marriage with links to where potential victims can get help. The App is free to download on iTunes, Google Play and Blackberry as well as the Freedom Charity website. www.freedomcharity.org.uk
