The Conservatives have described their plans to stop British laws being over-ruled by human rights judgements by Strasbourg as ‘viable and legal’

Chris Grayling Justice SecretaryJustice Secretary Chris Grayling said if the Tories won the 2015 election, a new Bill of Rights would give UK courts and Parliament the “final say”.

There should be no “legal blank cheque to take human rights into areas where they have never applied”, he added.

 

 

Labour and the Lib Dems have said the proposals are politically motivated while the UK Independence Party claimed they were “worthless”.

Home Secretary, Theresa May, has already expressed her eagerness to pull Britain from the European Convention on Human Rights.  The EU court has enforced controversial moves such as banning the deportation of radical cleric Abu Qatada.  He’s now back in Lebanon after a long legal battle to comply with EU human rights laws.  It’s expected Mrs May is planning to include the initiative in the next Tory election manifesto, and wants to withdraw from the European Convention on Human rights before 2015.  Is it the right move?  Click a box with your view
