The Olympic Games are underway following an outstanding opening ceremony.  The highlight was the lighting of the Cauldron.  It was the best kept secret of the Games.

No specific person lit the flame it was all done by an artistic circle of petals that came together and created the torch once they were lit by a group of young aspiring athletes.  The flame gave torchbearers a  ‘moment to shine’ during their journey across the country .  Many had amazing and emotional moments while they held the torch during their race of a lifetime. Eight thousand people ran with the Olympic torch on an eight thousand mile journey across the UK.  They were nominated and chosen to help inspire the nation to the Games and to sport.  The mix of community, personalities, actors and champion athletes was an incredible cocktail.

The torch relay for the Olympics lasted 70 days, with 66 evening celebrations. About 8,000 people carried the torch a total distance of about 8,000 miles (12,800 km), starting from Lands End in Cornwall.  A wide range of people carried the torch around the country, mostly sports men and women, military figures and other local heroes from towns and cities across the nation. A number of celebrities also held the flame on its journey, including Dr Who star Matt Smith.
