Margaret Thatcher

The funeral of former prime minister Margaret Thatcher has taken place at St Paul’s Cathedral Wednesday April 17.

It wasn’t a state funeral but it had the same status as Princess Diana and the Queen Mother.  Baroness Thatcher died April 8, following a stroke at the age of 87.  Some people in the UK celebrated her death by dancing on the streets because, they say, she divided the country while leader of the country.

Political leader

She was the first woman to be a Prime Minister in the UK despite being a grocer’s daughter from Grantham and led the country from 1979 to 1990.  Margaret Thatcher was regularly in the  headlines particularly for her strength as a political leader.

Film

Another occasion was when the film The Iron Lady, starring Meryl Streep was released in the UK in December last year.  This brought back memories of Baroness Thatcher and her home town Grantham. While some held respect for what she did memories of strikes still remained with many.

However, the town’s ex Mayor wanted to grab the moment, raise her profile and do Thatcher tourism. YNUKtv went to see if the locals were ready ‘for turning’.
